The first thing everybody tells you to do if you want to set up a blog is to start by picking your niche. And you might have heard of few niche that are said to be most profitable online. But have you had a dilemma where none of those niche are something that you are interested in or you won’t be interested in the long run?
Picking Your Niche
I personally do not believe that there are only few niche that can earn money. There will always be someone out there who will be interested in what you have to say. And I also believe that if that niche is not that popular yet, it means that there are still a lot of questions that needs to be answered and still a lot of problems that need solution.
Having said that, there are some criteria that you would want to keep in mind while choosing your niche.
Criteria in picking your niche:
1. It should be something that you are passionate about.
It could be something that you are good at and/or something that you enjoy talking about or reading about and/or something that you want to be good at. Blogging takes a lot of work especially a blog business. You will need to come up with blog posts every day or at least 2-3 times a week. That would mean more than 100 posts a year. That’s a lot of posts. And if this is a blog business, you’d want your business to stay longer than a year. Eventually, it will become challenging to come up with topics to cover and even harder to write one if your heart is not in it.
2. It should not be too broad.
If you are going to focus on one niche, you’d want to niche it down a little. If you have more than 3 hobbies with different categories, it would be more difficult to keep up in blogging. I used to blog about anything. On my personal blog, I blogged about web designing then shifted to crafts and DIY then my weight loss journey. It’s actually a lot more harder to find readers who will keep coming back to your blog if you don’t have enough posts on each category.
3. It should not be too narrow.
You don’t want to focus on a very small sub-niche. If you are passionate about traveling, you don’t want to focus on just backpacking in Machu Picchu. Although its not a bad idea but you will be limited only to what the place can offer. What you can do though is try to focus on backpacking across Europe or across Asia. Whatever you decide, make sure you can cover your topic for as long as you want your blog business to be active.
Affiliate Marketing Strategy
While I was browsing through the affiliate sites that I’m a member of, I recognize how big of a market they have. They have retailers in just about anything. So if you are someone who is passionate about something that is not related to what other people call the top profitable niche, you can definitely find something that you can tweak to be relevant to your post.
